While fall foliage is perhaps most well-known in New England, that’s not to say that those who live out in the southwestern more desert-y areas of the country are left without beautiful fall colors. And while Phoenix is still unbearably hot for the most, I’m filled with hope (and prayer!) that soon the heat breaks, the cool winds come, and the leaves on the trees start to turn their majestic hues of reds, yellows, and browns. Here are some great places to soak up the best of Autumn in Arizona:
- Oak Creek Canyon – Less well known than the Grand Canyon, but with views just as stunning. Beautiful fall foliage is set against the red desert of Red Rock Country. Peak time is late October.
- Boyce Thompson Arboretum – Superior, Arizona – A beautiful place to walk around and take in the beautiful Arizona landscape and the trees, flowers, and birds that inhabit it.
- Coconino National Forest – A spectacular hiking spot and a great spot for fall foliage enjoying.
- Snowbowl Ski Resort – Flagstaff, Arizona – Beautiful scenery all year round, but especially in the fall when the Kachina Peaks Wilderness’ colors are at their best.
- Tonto Natural Bridge State Park – Not only a great place for color changing beauty, but a cool natural phenomenon too! The whole area of Tonto National Forest is beautiful.
- Desert Botanical Garden – Phoenix, Arizona – A great place to visit once it starts to cool off around here…
Maybe in a few weeks it’ll be cool enough to venture out for a day hike…in the meantime, stick to your air conditioned car and go for some scenic drives through these areas. Enjoy! Happy Fall!
